Whales include both baleen species such as the humpback, blue and fin and toothed giants like the sperm whale, with baleen whales filter-feeding on vast quantities of krill and small fish. They pose a real collision risk to vessels, especially at night, and a strike from a large whale can damage or even sink a boat. For your safety and theirs, keep a safe distance of at least 100 metres, the minimum required in most jurisdictions. Humpbacks are renowned for breaching clear of the water, and the blue whale is the largest animal ever known to have lived, larger even than any dinosaur.
