All seven species of sea turtle are classed as endangered or vulnerable, making every sighting worth logging. They are solitary travellers that cross entire ocean basins, navigating by sensing the Earth's magnetic field, and their diet ranges from jellyfish to seagrass and sponges depending on the species. Sailors will often spot them basking motionless at the surface, where they are at real risk of propeller strike, so slow down and steer clear when you see one. Astonishingly, females return to nest on the very beach where they themselves hatched, sometimes decades earlier.
