Seals belong to the pinnipeds, a group that also includes sea lions and walruses, and they feed mainly on fish and cephalopods such as squid and octopus. They are highly social at their haul-outs, gathering in noisy, barking colonies on rocks and beaches, yet at sea they are curious creatures that will sometimes approach a boat to investigate. A seal hunting nearby is a reassuring sign of healthy fish stocks in the area. Beneath the water they are astonishingly capable divers, with some species holding their breath for well over an hour as they hunt at depth.
