Dolphins live in highly social pods ranging from ten to over a thousand individuals, hunting fish and squid that they track using sophisticated echolocation. They are famous among sailors for bow-riding, surfing the pressure wave at a vessel's prow seemingly for the sheer joy of it. They pose no danger to people or boats and have long been regarded as a good omen at sea. Remarkably, each dolphin develops a unique signature whistle that functions much like a name, allowing pod members to identify and call to one another.
